December 15, 1955History of the Great Libyan University
The Libyan University was established by a Royal Decree on December 15, 1955, with its first nucleus being the Faculty of Arts and Education in Benghazi. In 1957, the Faculty of Science was established, the first nucleus of the University of Tripoli. In 1966, the Faculty of Agriculture was established, and in 1961, UNESCO established the Higher Technical Studies College, which was incorporated into the Libyan University in 1967 as the Faculty of Engineering. In 1973, the Libyan University was split into two independent universities: the University of Benghazi and the University of Tripoli, beginning a comprehensive academic expansion across the nation.
